Just in time for the new Salvage Dawgs season, Fox & Friends Weekend featured a segment earlier this spring about the Dawgs filmed from the Black Dog Salvage showroom and design center in Roanoke, Va. Popular Fox News Channel host Anna Kooiman traveled south to the Star City to see where it all began - visiting Robert Kulp and Mike Whiteside on their home turf.
“While it is a great opportunity to show off our huge showroom and design center, it is also fun to draw more national attention to our hometown,” said Robert Kulp. “Anna is a Charlotte, N.C., native so I think she was happy to be back in the land of sweet tea and the Blue Ridge Mountains.”
The Dawgs put Anna to work in the shop to help build a swinging daybed made from balusters salvaged from Rising Sun Ranch in Alderson, W.V. Robert tested her carpentry skills in the wood shop and sparks were flying with Mike in the metal shop.
“Anna’s personality was a perfect match for our lighthearted style,” said Mike Whiteside. “She is also well known for her love of dogs, with her yellow Lab, Baxter, frequently visiting on her show – so she made fast friends with our four-legged black Dawgs.”
Salvage Dawgs chronicles the adventures of Robert Kulp and Mike Whiteside, owners of Southwestern Virginia-based Black Dog Salvage. Each episode leaves audiences laughing, inspired, and amazed as they stay just ahead of the wrecking ball to reclaim a wide range of vintage architectural elements and oddities. The salvaged materials go in a dazzling number of directions, from being incorporated into new “old” houses to being transformed into one-of-a-kind furniture and art featured on their warehouse floor and website.
“We are saving America, one house part at a time,” said owner Robert Kulp. “It’s satisfying to know that these architectural treasures will live on and be appreciated across the country.”
Throughout the series, Kulp strives to run a tight ship with his eye on the bottom line -- while spirited Whiteside takes a more creative approach, tearing through old homes and buildings – finding treasure in the most unexpected places and making things happen – even under the most challenging circumstances.
